One of the several issues that kicked off or supported the SDTC scandal was Liberal Steven Guilbeault being accused of funnelling $254 million dollars into his own company while acting as the Environment Minister. The ensuing investigation into such corruption on the Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) file – a.k.a. “The Green Slush Fund” – would lead to months of stalled Parliament when the Liberal Party repeatedly refused to abide by Parliament’s orders to hand over accounting, then Justin Trudeau’s resignation and the prorogation of Parliament, and finally his replacement by Mark J. Carney.

As Jim Warren wrote in Energy Now:

“. . .SDTC board members were awarding grants to each others’ companies. . .The Auditor General’s report suggests more than $300 million in SDTC grants could have been improperly awarded.”

In keeping with the Liberal Party’s attitudes towards corruption and improprieties, Guilbeault will continue on in Carney’s government, having now been shuffled to the position of Minister of Canadian Culture and Identity, Parks Canada, and Quebec Lieutenant. Apparently Carney himself may not have an issue with Liberal corruption, either.
